Project Description

The Old San Francisco Bay Bridge, a landmark architectural piece for the Bay Area, was completed on November 12, 1936. Following the partial collapse of the upper deck during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, construction of a new self-anchored suspension bridge began in 2002 which, according to Guinness World Records, is the world’s widest bridge. The Bay Bridge also serves as the logo for the world champion Golden State Warriors.

Sadly most of the metal from the deconstruction went to China for recycling however, we were able to reclaim the redwood lumber from the base of two piers. The protection this barrier provided during the Cosco Busan oil spill of 2007, in which a container ship crashed into one of the towers, is a testament to their strength and historical value.

Originally harvested from Northern California’s old growth redwood forests, the reclaimed Bay Bridge redwood lumber from these structures is magnificent. Available in 12×12 (net 11-1/4″ x 11-1/4″ lengths up to 26′ ), 6×12 (net 5-1/4″ x 11-1/4″ in 7′ lengths) and 1×12 (net 3/4″x 11-1/4″, lengths up to 22′) the color, stability, tight grain structure, and durability are astonishing. Free of knots, this reclaimed Bay Bridge redwood lumber could be milled into 2x slabs to make exquisite furniture pieces (tables, desks, bars, etc.), made into one of a kind interior/exterior siding, or used as unique, exposed beams or mantle pieces (most of the 6×12 measure 7′). The 1×12 is available in random lengths and served as the wall paneling throughout Steph Curry’s Under Armor store. Get your piece of Bay Area history before, like the old eastern span, it’s all gone!

Our FSC Certified Lumber is Sustainable and Green:

Wood is the only major building material that is renewable. When trees are cut, numerous others are planted. These new trees taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen as they grow. Since 1970 the North American forests have actually grown by 20%! Composite lumber, concrete, and brick are so much more harmful to the environment.

Wood is resistant, and in the right conditions, last for a very long time. Several wooden structures through out the world have lasted over a thousand years. In fact, a major part of our business is selling the incredible lumber from deconstructed buildings. The ultimate in reducing the consumption of materials, our reclaimed lumber is exquisite and rich in history. Our selections include Redwood from the Bay Bridge, Doug Fir the Alameda Marina, and Kapur from a Arizona copper mine. Instantly add history and allure to your home project. Research proves that “greenness” has a measurable impact on occupants. And not just in residential applications. Used in retail and hospitality, it enhances customer experiences. In healthcare it contributes to faster healing. In workspaces it promotes productivity and boosts morale. As urbanization continues, factoring these benefits into modern design is crucial. Reap the many benefits of wood by incorporating it in your next project.
